Description:

The incumbent serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic and is assigned to the Projects & Operations Section (Energy Center) at the Portland VA (PVAMC). The work involves installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to do the job of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Examples may include but not be limited to the following: Repair and maintenance of water and gas distribution systems and equipment, sewage disposal systems, fire sprinkler systems, low pressure steam distribution system to include regulating valves, traps, strainers, radiator valves and condensation piping. Ability to perform conduct air and water balance on HVAC systems. Must be able to use flow hoods, differential pressure measuring devices, rotation vane anemometer. Must be able to calculate air changes and room pressures. Requires an understanding of and the ability to install and troubleshoot direct digital controls (DOC). Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR : A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Selective Placement Factor : Certification Requirement: In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act of 1990, this position requires a current, valid Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
